As a freshman, Jacelyn was excited to be part of the Mx Scholar Program for STEM & Aerospace’s inaugural year.
Now a junior, Jacelyn is once again taking advantage of an exciting academic option, and is enrolled simultaneously at both Maryknoll School and Hawai‘i Pacific University (HPU).
Through an innovative partnership, Maryknoll students who qualify can take HPU courses for dual-credit, meaning that they count for both high school and college credit. Maryknoll students can take HPU courses at no additional tuition cost. They can even graduate with an HPU Associate of Arts degree at the same time as their Maryknoll High School diploma, potentially resulting in significant savings of up to two years’ of time and undergraduate tuition!
The Mx Scholar Programs at Maryknoll over the past two years readied Jacelyn for this early transition to college academics. After realizing that engineering was not her passion, she dove into Mx Business & Diplomacy classes and discovered an interest in international business.
Through the Mx Scholar Programs, Jacelyn was also matched with a business mentor, Mr. Alan Tang, the CEO of integrated marketing firm Olomana Loomis ISC. Alan and Jacelyn met several times during the school year to talk about professional and career development, and Jacelyn became one of only two high school interns in the company’s more than 20-year history, working with the agency staff with marketing and public relations projects during the summer of 2018.
“My mentor has taught me so much, and encouraged me to pursue my dreams,” says Jacelyn. “My internship in downtown Honolulu was an eye-opening experience, and prepared me to undertake Hawaii Pacific University’s degree program as a high school junior. I learned about all kinds of businesses and what makes them successful. There are so many more career options out there than I ever thought existed, and I’m looking forward to figuring out my own pathway for success.”
