About the Tony Sellitto Hawaiian Island Basketball ChallengeThe Hawaiian Island Basketball Challenge was started to honor Coach Tony Sellitto and his legacy at Maryknoll School. It connects the past and present of Maryknoll's Athletics Department with the intention to foster a brighter future for scholar-athletes of all ages.
Coach Sellitto, or "Tony the Tiger" as some have come to know him, was the Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Maryknoll from 1966 to 1988. During his tenure, Maryknoll went from a Class 1A school to a Class 2A school – at the time, the highest possible classification in the state.
Coach Sellitto led the Spartans to six league championships, five state playoffs and a state championship. All of this occurred before the Maryknoll Community Center was constructed, and the school at the time had no gym of its own on campus. Coach Sellitto is also credited with the only national basketball championship in Hawaii's history when Hawaii Pacific University, under his leadership, won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national title in 1992.
