Pi Day at Maryknoll: Students Raise Over $1,200 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Maryknoll Marketing & Communications
Pi Day was celebrated at Maryknoll today!

On Thursday, March 14, we celebrated Pi Day at Maryknoll! Our biggest activity was a week-long auction for students to vie for the winning bid to pie one of 25 teachers who volunteered. Proceeds from the auction were raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. More than $1,200 was raised for research and treatment of blood cancers, an ailment that also affects loved ones of our Maryknoll Community. Each teacher was pied by their winning bidders, to the delight of all who watched and cream and crust flew through the air!
Other activities included pie-eating contests, pi memorization contest, playing jumbo lawn games created by the Algebra II class, like tic tac toe, “Tower of Hanoi,” battleship, simplified craps, and “Call Your Shot!” Our 8th grade also came to visit and participated in the festivities, like the π-walk! Special Pi Day shirts were printed as prizes for the day. The Geometry classes create math board games for the 6th and 7th grade, while the Algebra I classes created board games for grades K-5 to enjoy and reinforce some math skills!  Our winning student memorized 200 digits of pi in correct sequence!  Students and faculty enjoyed both pi and pies. Happy Pi Day!
