6th Graders Experience Hawaii Island First-Hand

Maryknoll Marketing & Communications
Each year, our 6th grade class travels to Hawaii Island (the Big Island) as a way of experiencing Hawaiian culture, values, and history, while making integrated connections with different subject areas, with a special emphasis on science and social studies. They arrived in Kona on Wednesday, January 23rd and returned to Oahu on Friday, January 25th.
While on the Big Island, the 6th Graders hiked Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve, Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Lapakahi Archaeological District and later drove to Kilauea Military Camp.

Their entire Thursday was spent at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center with the Three Mountain Alliance to learn about native bird conservation and extinction prevention, and the importance of restoring native Hawaiian plants.

Before traveling back to Oahu, the 6th Graders stopped at the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii and the Mokupapapa Discovery Center. Mahalo to all those that made this journey meaningful and exciting for our 6th Grade class. Special Mahalo to Mr. Jonathan Hermosura for providing us with insights and photos of this special journey!
